Serendipity 2013

2013 was a year of highs and lows. We had some nice success… ...in the show ring, winning both the Racing Dog class and the Racing Bitch class at the AWC National with Tiercel (Serendipity Nighthawk, FCH, ARX, DPCX, TRPX, PR-6, SRM, OTRM-2, CGC) and Seven (Serendipity Hark The Lark, FCH, ARX, DPCX, TRP, PR-2), respectively. In August, Tiercel went on to win a big competitive DPCX class at the 2013 CWA National under breeder-judge Phoebe Booth of Shamasan Whippets, in spite of the spectacular sliding face plant his handler (yours truly) executed in the ring. Tiercel thought that was a peculiar stunt but carried on hamming it up for the ringside observers. He had a blast and so did I (even if my pride was a little bruised). In spite of missing several meets due to her seasons, Seven did well enough in the CWA matches to hold onto the #10 spot in the very competitive year-end CWA Conformation standings. We show very sparingly, almost exclusively at specialties, CWA matches, and matches at the big national performance events, so these prestigious wins are very special!

...in the field, where Seven and Jonah (FC Serendipity On A Lark, FCH, TRP, PR-2) both finished their ASFA titles, and Jonah finished his AKC title with his third major. Both of them also managed to get into the ribbons at the National ASFA trial in Eugene. Seven picked up her first point towards her AKC title in her first AKC trial and looks forward to earning more in 2014.

...on the track, where Jonah had a very good year, improving his score to a B average, and picking up four more ARX points, bringing his total to seven - halfway there! Hokum (Serendipity Malarkey at Whimsy, ARX, DPCX, TRP, PR) finished his ARX and DPCX for his proud owner Mary Downing of Whimsy Whippets. Seven and Jonah both made their debuts on the oval track in 2013 and hope to do more NOTRA racing in 2014.

Jonah is very proud to have sired his first “litter” – a perfect singleton puppy out of the talented, athletic and beautiful MACH2 Cherche’ It’s All Understood, T2B, RN, JC, CR, OTR, bred and owned by Ariel Schoenfeld of Unsinkable Whippets in Pennsylvania. We can’t wait to see what our grandpuppy Toasty grows up to accomplish!

For the lows, in August, Ringer (CH HH Serendipity Eight Bells, LCM, TRP, DPC, PR, SR, OTRM-2, CGC) was diagnosed with lymphoma. Fortunately, he responded very well to a minimal chemotherapy protocol and is currently in remission and feeling great. I hope he’ll continue to enjoy good quality of life for some time. To close out the year, Tiercel suffered an FCE (fibrocartilaginous embolism), and was temporarily paralyzed. Thankfully he has recovered considerable motor function and is doing very well. Although he will have to be retired from competition before either of us was really ready for that, he should be able to live a normal active life, and that is a lot to be grateful for.
