What is a Whippet?

The Whippet is a medium-sized short-coated sighthound - the family of dogs that hunt by sight instead of by scent. Combining a friendly, amiable disposition with elegance and athleticism, whippets are not for everyone but they are wonderful family pets given the right family. In temperament, the Whippet is affectionate and gentle, but is capable of great intensity during sporting events. Whippets originated in 19th century England, and were first recognized in the United States by the American Kennel Club in 1888.
