My thanks to the WWWA for inviting me to judge the Sweepstakes, it is always a pleasure to spend time with Whippets and their sporting owners.

I found the Whippets better in some respects and disappointing in others. I was looking through old magazines (1980's and 90's) recently and think that there is an improvement in outlines and proportions, but fronts need attention, short upright upper arms, straight pasterns and toeing-in are still problems and the rear frequently is not balanced, being too long from stifle to hock. Heads were all attractive, expressions pretty, ears carried well, so it is clear breeders are paying attention to the cosmetic features. Personal preferences of fanciers vary as regards size, colour and head features and I did not let my own preferences influence the placings. (Although I would have thought I'd died and gone to heaven if I had found a small moderate sound-moving blue fawn!). My placings were based mainly on construction, balance and movement, the standard emphasizes the functional aspects of the breed and so do I.

There was one class of 11 entries and one of 3, all the other classes were of 1 or 2 dogs, and I do not think it would be fair to point out the shortcomings of dogs who had little competition and whose faults did not affect their placing.

Summit Start Me Up, and 2. Summit Shine On. Quality litter brothers (Ch.Summit Wildoats Fine and Dandy x Ch. Arwen's Main Event at Summit SC) having a lovely time at the Dog Party, I preferred the length and balance of the winner.

9-12.(3): 1. Lost Creek Charnu (Lost Creek Bzantium Galewind x Ch.Castlecrest's  Firestorm). 2. Shantellie Tye One On (Shantellie It's My Party JC x Ch. Winigo's Rebellious Ellie MayJC). 3. Lost Creek Vendange (littermate to 1.) This was a tough class, as I went over each one I was thinking this is my winner. The decision was on movement and balance, Charnu is the least mature but is right for his age, he has the body length to move effortlessly, and is balanced and moderate, with good topline and underline. No. 2 got his placing on his nice shoulder with front fill, he's a lovely type (and colour!) and looks like an athlete.

12-15 (2): 1. Snow Hill Hot Stuff (Ch. Sportingfield's Hot Topic x Ch. Snow Hill Mind, Body and Soul SC). 2. Taliesin Moonstruck (Ch. Brushwood Prime Time Endeavor x Taliesin English Muffin). No.1 is a glamourous dog who was moving better than the second dog today.

15-18 (1): 1. Daydream & Lovats Red Baron (Ch. Castlecrest's King's Ransom x Castlecrest's

Lucky Penny). Attractive dog with a nice outline, length and balance.

Bitches: 6-9. (1): 1. Summit Uptown Girl at Corliza (Ch. Summit Wildoats Fine And Dandy x Ch. Arwen's Main Event At Summit SC). Quite grown up for her age with nice shoulders, topline and front fill. Very long and will take time to grow into it.

9-12. (11): This was a tough one, some I liked but their movement let them down, but the class was full of beautiful quality youngsters. 1. Windigo N Tivio Perfect At Terrapin (Ch. Red Cloud Tivio Touchstone JC x Ch. Tivio Windigo Perfectly Tuned). 2. Tivio N Woodrose Material Girl (Ch. Bo-Betts Spotlight Pursuit x Ch. Tivio Shine On You Crazy Diamond). 3. Lost Creek Cerasuolo (Lost`Creek Bzantium Galewind x Ch. Castlecrest's Firestorm). 4. Lost Creek A Taste Of Red (Lost Creek Bzantium Galewind x Ch. Castlecrest's Firestorm). The winner of this class was the one I would have taken home, she was full of quality, and she had the topline and underline, balance, length, shoulders and strong second thigh that I was looking for. Second was a brindle and white with good length and strong hindquarters. Third was a smaller, charming bitch, nice quality and balanced, and fourth her litter sister. There were seven puppies from this litter entered in sweeps, all lovely quality, their breeders should be proud to have produced such an even and stunning litter.

Best in Sweeps was Windigo N Tivio Perfect At Terrapin, Best Opposite Sex Lost Creek Charnu.

Veteran Sweeps:

Dogs 7-10 Years. (1): 1. Ch. Lost Creek Malted Milk Whimsy (Ch. Allerei's Martino x Ch. Whimsy's Val d'Isere Allerei). A great dog who can hold his own anywhere, he is balanced, strong, moderate, with a classic outline. A real class act.

Dogs 10-12 (1): 1. Ch. Windstar's Betelguese (Ch. Castlecrest's Maverick x Ch. Chehalem's Bali Hai Blue Moon). A strong dog looking well for his age, good shoulders, balanced body.

Bitches 10-12 (2): 1. Castlecrest Addicted To Love (Ch. Karasar's Head Of The Class x Ch. Limard's Camelot). 2. Ch. Tivio's Exotic Wood JC (Ch. Red Cloud Quintessence JC x Ch. Tivio's Sagehill Dancer).Love the No.1  bitch, and apparently I always did, they told me later I put her Best in Sweeps at a Specialty when she was a puppy. Lovely size, balance, length. To me, she is just what a Whippet shoud be. Lucky owners. The second bitch is a quality bitch, with nice front and underline.
